New this year during the FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS was the event “FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS goes local”. Many selective illuminations, actions and events showed the special quarters and corners of Berlin, which are aside the well-known landmarks. “FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS goes local” showed the hidden architectural treasures of Berlin’s quarters and highlighted buildings, courtyards and quarters. Sometimes only a day, sometimes the whole festival.

7 – 16 October: New landmarks in the Nikolaiviertel
There is always something going on in the Nikolaiviertel. In October the birth of Berlin was again place of fascinating actions and attractions. During the Festival of Lights the introspective quarter was a place of light art. A special role this year had the Nikolaikirche. The international awarded video artist Ross Ashton from London and his partner Karen Monid let the oldest preserved church from Berlin glow in a new light. The title of the production is “SPIRITUS – Light and Darkness”.
The artwork contains special instrumental interpretations of music inspired by the role of angels in the workings of the universe. This includes an arrangement of the responsorial ‘O vos angeli’ composed by the 12th century German abbess, Hildegard von Bingen. Her particular theology encompassed a universe consisting of a fusion of light and sound where angels play a central role in their music-making. To draw in sound the visual image of angels as conceived from the medieval period onwards, the instruments heard are those typically illustrated in the hands of angels, such as harps and bells.
Special thanks goes to:
During this year’s festival the BUND let the walls of the Marstall alongside the Spree grow into a wild alluvial forest. The banks of Spree, Havel or Elbe were originally very different: wild, green and full of live! “Living wetlands for the Elbe” is the name of the current project, which is promoted by the federal program for biological diversity. The Elbe shall stream into a alluvial forest and create wilderness. Wild nature and animals in the heart of Berlin!
The Moonseat is a beautiful light art installation, which creates the illusion that the observer becomes a moon worshipper himself. His shadow becomes a fabulous creature and however he moves, his shadow will follow him.
Furthermore, individual actions animated the Nikolaiviertel and made it a place of light art.
7 – 16 October: German Patent and Trademark Office
At the beginning there was light… 110 years ago OSRAM applied for their denominative mark description at the imperial patent office Berlin. What is better than celebrating this eventful history full of technological moments than with light art?!
The history of the development from analog to digital light was retraced at the German Patent and Trademark Office with an individual video mapping. Also the number 110 played a part…
