Europe in a new light

Light for Europe from the capital of Germany – Ministries and Europe House were enlightened during Festival of Lights

Europe is our future. Why this is so and why one must simply love Europe, eight federal ministries and EU institutions wanted to show through artistic large-screen projections. From different perspectives, the ministries and EU institutions presented how the European Union positively influences our lives and makes our everyday lives better and underlines that we must commit ourselves to European values in order to defend them. One point of commitment being the European elections in 2019, when the European Parliament is re-elected. Some of the inspirational projections contain #Hashtags. With every photo of the lit up motifs and it’s sharing in social media, we have set a sign for Europe and recalled: #EuropeUnited.

Federal Ministry of Finances

With three festival contributions, the BMF was honoring three important European events: In 2018, the European Union celebrates one of its greatest achievements: the customs union. For 50 years, it has been protecting European citizens and allowing them to enjoy the full benefits of the single market by allowing free trade. 2018 is also the year of the EU citizens’ dialogue – the BMF placed a stage for the wishes of the people and projects them onto the facade of their official building. So that the voices for Europe will be loud and numerous in 2019 for the European elections, the BMF was already shining for Europe.

Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy

With its artful motives, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy wanted to show why it is worthwhile to stand up for Europe, which is why economic policy is also a European policy and what will always be at the center of economy: the human being.
The imagination of the artist and the viewer were in demand in this projection.
How do you imagine the #SocialMarket Economy, for example?

Ministry of Defense

“I protect what you do not see.” Under this motto, the Bundeswehr took part in the festival for the first time and made itself and its tasks more visible for the public.

Built in the 1930s, the Shell House, rented by the German Ministry of Defense since 2012, was illuminated with polygons and invited all to reflect and discuss.

Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection

A projection motif was recounting the history of the building of the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection (BMJV), which was once the seat of numerous Jewish fashion and clothing makers, who made Berlin a world-famous city of fashion. Other motifs on the facade of the BMJV during the festival dealed with the rule of law and liberal values such as law, peace and equality.

Federal Ministry of Health

Health in Germany and Europe, vaccinations, digitisation – these topics were addressed by means of projections on the building of the Federal Ministry of Health.

Federal Ministry of Education and Research

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research did like to call attention to the 2nd Conference of the Ministers of Science on Arctic Research which took place on the 25. and 26. of October, not on their own building, but on the Neue Marstall as part of the video show “House of Nature” with photos of the breathtaking beauty of the Arctic.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development is committed to: combating poverty, peace, freedom, democracy and human rights, the preservation of the environment and natural resources. The focus is currently on the close cooperation with Africa. The projection motifs illustrated the goal of making globalization fair – for Germany, for Europe and the world.

Federal Foreign Office

Europe stands for solidarity, responsibility, openness, tolerance and diversity. For example, the Federal Foreign Office on Werderscher Markt 1, in the immediate vicinity of the newly build Berlin Palace, was the best place to point out these European core values under #EuropeUnited with five different motifs.

European House

Directly on Pariser Platz, opposite the Hotel Adlon, is the European House. There the representations of the European Commission and the European Parliament sit in Germany. Both institutions did put a focus on the European elections in the coming year with common projection motives. Festival visitors could take a journey through history, politics and life in the European Union in the free interactive exhibition “Experience Europe” featured inside of the building.
