A touch of the Roaring Twenties swept into the Nikolaiviertel: alongside the final season of the hit German series “Babylon Berlin,” the corner building on Rathausstraße became the canvas for a video projection featuring images of 1920s Alexanderplatz—home of the legendary dance hall “Moka Efti.” Inside St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche) itself, visitors were enchanted by the art installation “Angels of Love” and the light installation “Prima Ballerina.”

A place full of secrets. The dark alleys of an old magical city. In 2023, the Nikolai Quarter presented itself as a magical place with bright colors in the trees, angel wings and “Swings in the Clouds”.

The historic Nikolai Quarter has proven to be a crowd puller in recent festival years. And rightly so: because the many, beautiful motifs and photo spots in the middle of Berlin and the inviting alleys of the Nikolaiviertel make an unbeatable “match”. The uniqueness of the Nikolaiviertel with its small romantic alleys full of interesting shops, cafés and restaurants was emphasised, because this historic place is “simply magical”. The productions were made possible by our loyal festival partner WBM, the Berlin-Mitte housing association.

A permanent landmark in every festival is Berlin’s oldest district, the Nikolaiviertel. It was rebuilt on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the city and makes it a real Berlin sight. During the Festival of Lights it invites visitors to take a walk through the historic surroundings and past atmospherically illuminated squares and facades.
