9. Nikolai Quarter – Wappenbrunnen
Colourful Illumination
At Nikolaikirchplatz, the Wappenbrunnen and the surrounding trees are vividly illuminated. The lively lighting highlights the historical significance of the fountain, which was built in 1987 to commemorate the founding of the city. Eight coats of arms are displayed, representing the guilds of Berlin and Cölln—such as butchers, bakers, shoemakers, and cloth makers.
These coats of arms are documented in the original Berlin charters from 1442 and 1448. Also hard to miss is the nearly five-meter-tall caterpillar, an art installation cleverly climbing the tree next to the fountain.
